Plans created using AMS REALTIME Enterprise
Projects can have the activities within them tracked
in two ways. The traditional way is supported...
assign resources, allow them to record the hours
they have worked on activities and perhaps allow
them to adjust the remaining work (ETC), calculate
progress based on this data. In 6.0 there is a new
option is to track progress - via the completion
of
steps. Your project plan can be made up of
some activities tracked in the traditional way, and
others via steps.
The best way to explain tracking by steps is to use
an example. Lets say that part of your plan requires
programmers to produce 3 modules. For each of
these modules, each programmer has to carry
out the following steps and each of these steps
contribute to the progress of the activities called
Module 001 (and 002, 003) based on the weightings
shown. For example: Specify (20%), Plan Testing
(10%), Design (20%), Build (30%), Test (20%).
In Enterprise Projects you can define this series of
steps in the steps table and give the series a name.
When planning you can associate a step series name
with one or more activities (i.e. Module 001, 002,
003) in your plan. Each step in the series can also
have a reference document (containing instructions,
or a template for example) associated with it. This
ensures that the project manager is clear about the
work involved in completing each step.
When tracking, the project manager can select the
activity with steps, click on the Steps button
and check off the steps that have been
completed for each activity. Progress will be
automatically calculated, based on the steps
completed and their respective ratios. So for Module
001, checking off Specify and Plan Testing, would
result in a progress calculation of 30%.
This feature augments the powerful ways of tracking
progress already avalable in AMS REALTIME, and will
further simplify the process of keeping your
organization's project plans up-to-date.
